The 2018 Echézeaux Grand Cru has a precocious, exuberant nose with vibrant red fruit intermixed with orange pith, potpourri and dried herbs - complex and very well delineated. The oak is seamlessly integrated both here and on the palate. It is finely sculpted, fresh and almost minty in character for a period, before the finish delivers quite intense blood orange infused red fruit on the finish. Real pedigree here. Clear vigorous purple. There is plenty of charm here, and some subtlety too, despite the very evident density of the fruit. Certainly a very ripe and exuberant fruit but the structure holds the balance. Maybe a hint of the volatile. Maybe ferrous notes from the soil. This 2018 is risking a lot, but delivering the goods. Much like the Reignots, this is intensely floral with a broad range of spice elements adding lovely layering to the ripe poached plum aromas that are trimmed in just enough wood to merit pointing out. The seductive and caressing yet powerful larger-scaled flavors coat the palate with dry extract that also buffers the prominent tannic spine shaping the beautifully complex and lengthy finish. This well-balanced though equally austere and robust effort should also age gracefully for many years to come. In short, this is a very serious Echézeaux. (Drink starting 2038) - BH
