The 2021 Mazoyères-Chambertin Grand Cru is just as elegant in bottle as it appeared to be from barrel. Soaring from the glass with exotic aromas of wild berries, plums, blood orange, vine smoke, exotic spices and pencil shavings, it's full-bodied, suave and mineral, with a deep core of fruit, powdery tannins and a long, rose-inflected finish. In its different style, it's every bit as good as its 2020 counterpart. - WA

A hint of crushed fennel sits atop the more deeply pitched and more sauvage-inflected aromas of wild dark berries, forest floor and plenty of floral elements. There is both excellent volume and mid-palate density to the muscular big-bodied flavors where the sappy dry extract coats the mouth as well as the firm core of supporting tannins on the powerful, youthfully austere and impressive long finish. This too is packed with potential and a wine that should easily be capable of 15 to 20 years of improvement. - BH
