This is, as always, the crown jewel of the stable, a blend of Mencía and Bastardo, Garnacha Tintorera, Godello, and Doña Blanca (a field blend if you will) aged under flor. The vineyard was planted at the end of the 19th century and lies at 580 meters elevation. It was fermented 100% whole cluster in open top, 700-liter barrel, underwent a 60-day maceration, aged 12 months in neutral barrel, and bottled sans fining and filtration. No matter the vintage, this wine always shows the profundity of its terroir, terrific elegance, and pitch-perfect complexity. In the best vintages, and 2018 is shaping up to be one, even more so than normal. Fans of this wine (myself included) won’t want to miss it.
