HONG KONG – MAY 30, 2022 – Despite ongoing lockdowns and restrictions in China, the wine market once again showed its resilience with Acker’s May Hong Kong auction realizing HK$70 million / US$9 million in sales. The two-day sale was led by an incredible consignment direct from the cellars of Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair, with the Domaine setting an impressive twenty New World Records out of a total 137 all-time highs for the weekend. The auction excitement was heightened by prized selections from other notable collections, including The Forbidden Cellar, The Golden Bull, and The Emperor. Despite a volatile month of May in the world markets, Acker will close the month with nearly US$20 million in auction sales, continuing to illustrate that fine wine is still one of the best alternative assets in the market.

The Top Ten Lots were led by two New World Records, including a one-of-a kind barrel of 2020 Comte Liger-Belair Nuits St. Georges selling for a sizeable price of $244,181 to match, and a methuselah of 2004 Domaine de la Romanee Conti Romanee Conti up next earning $231,329. Six magnums of a rare OWC of 2003 DRC Assortment followed in the third position, totaling $115,665, and A. Rousseau earned fourth prize, fetching $77,110 for twelve bottles of 2005 Chambertin in its original case. Bordeaux made its way back into the top ten thanks to treasures from The Forbidden Cellar, first with a case of 1982 Chateau Lafleur in a three way tie with twelve bottles each of 2009 Domaine Leroy Clos Vougeot and 2006 DRC La Tache, all selling for $70,684. The ever-present DRC was back in the next two spots with eleven bottles of 2016 La Tache and twelve bottles of 2017 La Tache both collecting $64,258. Twelve bottles of 1959 Chateau Haut Brion in its original wood case, another selection from the Forbidden Cellar, and twelve bottles of 2010 A. Rousseau Chambertin completed the Top Ten, with both lots going for $61,045.

The showpiece of the auction, Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair, has a long-storied history in Burgundy, but its modern chapter began with the Comte Louis Michel Liger-Belair, who in 2000 took control of the Domaine. Comte Louis Michel, who restored the estate and judiciously added to the numerous hectares under vine, has also added to the prestige and adoration of this historically revered estate and its notably limited wines that have become adored by collectors and drinkers alike. In addition to the aforementioned exclusive barrel of 2020 Nuits St. Georges, selections earning New World Records included rare jeroboams of 2012 Vosne Romanee La Colombiere and 2009 Vosne Romanee Clos du Chateau, selling for $6,103 and $7,709, respectively. Limited magnums of 2015 Vosne Romanee ($2,570), Vosne Romanee Les Suchots ($8,351), Vosne Romanee Aux Reignots ($8,994), Vosne Romanee Les Petits Monts ($10,279), and the very first vintage of 2015 Clos Vougeot hammered at $8,994, added to the World Record tally. World record highlights culminated with La Romanee, and the extremely small crop of 2019 rocketing to $9,636, and very rare magnums of 2012 and 2016 La Romanee garnering $17,988 and $21,842.

“Despite a lot of uncertainty this month, it’s great to see the wine world remaining vigorous! We rode the Golden Bull once again, the Emperor struck back, and we explored the depths of the tremendous Forbidden Cellar. Great cellars such as these still attract the best of collectors. Of course, we were extremely honored to present selections direct from the cellars of Comte Liger-Belair, which had bidders in a frenzy to own the incredibly delicious wines from the Domaine. The Comte continues to set the bar higher and higher every year, and we are very honored to welcome his wines to our auctions every year,” commented Acker Chairman John Kapon. “There’s still more to come from Acker this auction season, with two more impressive sales before the summer break. This holiday weekend we are putting together the June auction, and it’s going to be a whopper! There’s still time to be part of the July Hong Kong auction, so don’t hesitate to get your collections ready to catch this market before summer!”

Acker’s auction season continues in Delaware on June 22nd and 23rd. Acker is currently accepting wines for the July 9th Hong Kong auction, with a deadline of Friday, June 10th. Spirits auctions close monthly, and weekly web auctions close each week. For more information, email info@ackerwines.com
